Replacing Windows and Doors: What to Consider
Windows and doors do a lot more than finish off the look of a home. They affect natural light, ventilation, temperature, noise and how easily you move between spaces.
Over time, older windows and doors can start to show their age. You might notice draughts, sticking frames, rattling panels, worn seals, water getting in or outside noise becoming more noticeable. In some homes, the windows and doors can also make the whole property feel dated, even after other areas have been renovated.
Replacing them is a good opportunity to improve both the look and day-to-day comfort of the home.
Choosing the right window or door
There is no single option that suits every property. The right choice depends on the style of the home, the size of the opening, how the room is used and what you want to improve.

What the replacement process involves
The first step is to inspect the existing opening and confirm what is being replaced. Measurements need to be accurate, and the surrounding structure should be checked before the new product is ordered.
Once the new window or door is ready, the existing frame is carefully removed. Depending on the age and construction of the home, this may reveal damaged timber, failed flashing, gaps around the frame or other issues that need to be repaired before installation continues.
The new frame is then positioned, levelled, fixed and sealed. Flashing and waterproofing are completed around the opening, followed by internal reveals, architraves, trims or external finishes as required.
For larger changes, such as replacing a standard sliding door with bifold or stacking doors, the opening may need to be widened. This can involve removing part of the wall, temporarily supporting the structure and installing a new beam before the door system is fitted.
Good installation matters
Even a high-quality window or door will not perform properly if it is poorly installed.
The details around the frame are just as important as the product itself. Correct flashing, solid fixing, proper sealing and neat internal and external finishes all help prevent draughts, movement and water problems.
Clean reveals, tidy trim work and careful matching with the existing walls, brickwork or cladding also make the finished job look like part of the home rather than something added later.
