Project Details
This project involved extending an existing upper-level balcony to create a larger and more practical outdoor living area, along with the construction of a new roof over the deck. The extension was carefully integrated with the existing two-storey brick home, including detailed finishing around the existing doors, windows and building edges. The expanded deck gave the homeowners considerably more usable space, while the lightweight roof design allowed natural light to continue reaching the balcony and the rooms along the rear of the home.
Project Brief
The owners wanted to make better use of the upper level by extending the existing balcony and creating enough space for relaxing, dining and entertaining. A key part of the brief was to add weather protection without making the area feel dark or enclosed. The new balcony also needed to work with the existing structure of the home, preserve the elevated outlook and maintain natural light to the adjoining rooms.
Outcome
The completed balcony provides a much larger and more versatile outdoor area that can be enjoyed throughout the year. The new roof offers protection from the sun and rain, while the translucent panels allow daylight to continue filtering through to the deck and the rooms behind it. The warm timber decking and posts complement the existing brickwork, and the cable balustrades keep the space feeling open and connected to the surrounding views. The result is a practical, comfortable outdoor extension that feels like a natural part of the home rather than a separate addition.
